Surprise Trip - Rawsonville
On Saturday the 7th of January we were invited to drive
a trail up a mountain outside Rawsonville. The purpose
was to look at the scenary as well as to explore the
farm for the possibility of camping there at some future
time.
The team consisted of Greg, Russell, Johan, Sandy, Herman,
Morne, James, other Morne, Jan Le Roux and Herman Bok.
The day dawned overcast and at 6h30 we were on our way
to the meeting point. Herman had a puncture before we
left and Johan made quick work of repairing the puncture.
We arrived at the Du Toitskloof valley and met the farmer
who took us to the farm and after giving us a short
tour of the farm on his old 4x2 Toyota bakkie he unlocked
the gate and we were on our own. The route was used
to harvest proteas and the trail was grade 3 in sections
with inclines at 20 degrees and lots of very loose stones.
I deflated to 1.5 before we started and soon decided
to deflate to 1.2 bars. Johan and Russell with the MTR's
were down at 0.6 bars. The trail crept skywards and
soon we were in the cloud.
Visiblity was good and soon we found ourselves in a
clearing of pine trees just below the summit. The farmer
had said that it would take at least 2h30min to get
to the top but we made it in 45 minutes. We had a tea
break and soon a fire was made in the designated fire
circle and talking started. In no time it was noon and
the morning fire became the braai fire.
The surrounding were covered with beautiful fynbos,
ericas and proteas. The mist gave the whole area a feel
of the Scottish Highlands.
The mist lifted at 13h00 and we made our way down the
mountain, stopping at the lookout to see the 35m waterfall.
On a sunny day we would have walked to the falls for
a swim. By 14h30 our tyres were pumped and we were on
our way home.
What a great way to spend a Saturday. The entry fee
of R50 per vehicle was donated to one of our charities.
