Buffelsfontein 29th January 2006

Not a good start. Just before midnight, I suddenly remembered I did not have enough indemnity forms for the whole group. Planned on getting to the 7/11 as they opened to see if they could help. Just after 6am, I opened my front door and was very surprised to see Johann waiting there. While I finished packing, he went off to get copies of the forms for me. That done, we left for the Garage in Melkbos.

Surprisingly everyone was on time - except for 1 vehicle that thought we had left earlier and they tried to catch up, and gave up the chase in Langebaan. After a quick phone call to see where we were, they met us at the main gate and we all went in together. At the reception, we were met by the owner Paul Loubser.

He gave us some background on Buffelsfontein and then took us on a game drive. We left the lions until last - once we had finished driving for the day. During the drive, we saw amongst others, Bontebok, Giraffe, Springbok, Eland and Buffalo.

The 4x4 trail was not that difficult. Soft sand, but all vehicles had deflated tyres. The trail is a circular route that is only 5km long. The plan was to complete the route and then do it in the reverse direction. This eventually caught a few folk out - not quite enough momentum and possibly the tyre pressure was a bit high. Don't know if anyone else noticed, but our "Langebaan" family were one of the vehicles caught out.

Unfortunately, Sandy was called out for a veterinary emergency, so she missed out on the reverse route. Hope the animal was ok!

After the trail, we went back to the Reception area for a braai in the lapa. I only noticed 2 people in the pool, the rest spent the afternoon in the shade having lunch and just relaxing.

All in all, we spent 1 hour on the game drive and 2 ½ hours on the 4x4 route (including stops).

There were no mishaps, and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves
