Matroosberg - 16th to 17th September 2006
The three couples, (Clive and Linda), (Andre & Lorraine), (Ian & Veronica), set off at
8am on Saturday for the Matroosberg. We had heavy rain all the way and there plenty of waterfalls
en route. No flowers, except for the blossoms on the cherry trees at Klondyke Cherry Farm.
After arriving at Matroosberg we quickly unpacked and settled down in the very dry, warm and
comfortalbe ski hut while it poured with rain. It rained all day and all night and it was
bitterly cold (3 degrees outside) during the day. Andre and Lorraine kept us entertained
with their stories of overland trips while Clive prepared a much needed potjie on our inside
fire. Our fire was on from 11 inthe morning till 11 at night in order to keep the cold out.
We were also kept amused by the farmers border collie who latched onto us for the weekend.
On Sunday morning we could see snow on the Matroosberg and after a hearty farmyard
breakfast (thanks to Clive) we headed off for the snow. The rain had stopped and our friendly
border collie ran ahead of us all the way to the top of the mountain. Veronica estimated
3cm of snow - enough for her to throw a snow ball down the front of my shirt ( will get her
back for that). It was so cold on top of the mountain that Veronica was forced to wear a
"Beanie," much to her dislike ( I have a photo to prove it). The cars did well on a trail
that was badly eroded after the overnight rain. Along the route we saw raptors and pleanty
of King Proteas in flower. After building a snowman and a photo shoot (thanks to Linda)
we headed back down to pack up and set off for Cape Town after a most enjoyable weekend.
