4x4 Offroad Adventure Club's Fishing Weekend - 9th to 11th March 2007
Friday the 9th of March saw seven members of the club departing for the club's first
fishing trip.
The destination was Greg and Brad's cottage on the Breede River and with boats in tow
we arrived at the river just after 5pm and as soon as the visiting boats were licensed
for the river they were launched and tied up at the jetty.
The fishing "team" consisted of Greg, Clive, Eric, Terry, Brad, Chuck and Andy and
with the three boats waiting the sun started to set. After a braai we left the jetty just
after 8.30pm. The night was very dark and we travelled downstream using the GPS waiting for
the moon to rise over the horizon at about 10pm. The fish finder showed lots of fish
passing under the boat and we dropped anchor.
Almost immediately the fish started biting and by 6.30 am, after fishing all night we
had caught and released 30 fish, kob, sea barbel, blacktail and eel. As the dawn was breaking
we pulled up our anchors and went home for two hours sleep before venturing to the mouth to
collect mud prawn. After Eric tried to catch some live bait with his throw net we tied up at
the hotel's moorings for a quiet lunch. The lack of sleep was taking it's toll and before
we crashed under the table we were back on the boats on our way back to the cottage.
Another hour of sleep and we made supper and were back on the boats for another night of
fishing.
Saturday night was slow and the bites were few and far between, even though the
fishfinder still showed lots of fish in the area. I moved 900 meters down stream to the
spot where we were so successful the previous night but to no avail. We tried a bit longer and
moved back up river finally getting some takes.
By 7.30am we had caught a total of about 50 fish and were exhausted, by now we had had
three hours sleep since Friday morning. After securing the boats we turn in for another 2
hours sleep and then started packing up for the trip back to CT.
We had an awesome time.
