Birdwatching, Jamaka - 23rd to 25th March 2007
Friday the 23rd saw five vehicles leaving Cape Town for the Cederberg for a camping weekend
and incorporated therein was the first outing of the bird watching interest group.
We managed to get away by 3pm and after a quick coffee at the Kardoesie farm stall we
descended the pass to Citrusdal and then to the Algeria turnoff. We had booked at Jamaka Organic
Farm and reached camp by 5.30pm and before 6pm our tents were up and we were almost settled.
Jamaka is a great camp site with lots of trees, grass and on the rivers edge. We had five
sites together with shade and a cliff as a backdrop.
The evening was warm and with the fire burning at the riversedge it felt very cosy. Most of
the group knew one another and it was great talking about old trips and old times. Some of
the friendships go back five years so there was a lot of talking and laughing. Joan told us
all about the Cinderella principle of putting coals under your chair.
The birds were not that prolific but we managed to see a few smaller birds and Don
managed to take a few pics. Don and I did a circumnavigation of the Clanwilliam Dam looking
for raptors but to no avail and so after lunch decided to try a 4x4 descent of a mountain
that was supposed to be challenging. The descent was rated a 3 and it was effortless, besides
watching for rocks that punctured the grass waiting for an unobservant driver.
The wind was blowing down the valley but by the time the sun had set the wind started to
drop and soon we were around the fire talking about the day.
Sunday was leisurely with more time for photographs and after packing up we headed back home.
All in all a great weekend.
