Midweek Madness - 31st May 2007
Winelands Engen was the meeting place for the awesome run up a private mountain pass in
the Boland.
The evening was warm and after grabbing a quick cup of coffee we walked to the vehicles,
casting shadows from the full moon. Three people who had booked never arrived and so after
waiting ten minutes we got moving and drove towards the Paarl turnoff.
After deflating tyres and locking hubs we climbed over two heaps of sand and after
calling our connection we started up the pass. Since the last rains the track has become very
erroded and Russell and I pondered whether the track would be rated 2 or 3. The drop off on
the right was a bit hectics here and there and rumour has it that Russell drove up peeping
through his fingers (scared of heights!).
The track climbed for almost two kilometers, doubling back at the neck and finally
cresting the mountain. At 9pm the evening was still warm and with the full moon glistening
we consumed our picnic suppers. We are not allowed to make fires on the mountain and so had to
resort to jackets for warmth. The wind slowly picked up and the evening became cool while the
wind blown clouds reflected the full moon. After the steaming coffee was finished we packed up
and descended the mountain to the road.
Tyres were inflated and we departed for home.
Another awesome Midweek Madness with weather one could only dream of the night before June.
