Mont Eco - 31st August to 2nd September 2007
Ten of us (five cars) set off on Friday afternoon in cool cloudy weather, Chris and Juanita,
Corné and Erica, George and Susan, Andy and Veronica and trail leaders Ian and Veronica. Yes,
having two Veronica's did lead to a few laughs throughout the weekend.
We arrived at Mont Eco at 16h00 having taken a slow drive through Worcester and Montagu.
All the time the weather was improving and it so turned out that we had no rain over the weekend.
Having received our well prepared information packages and filling in of those endless forms
we headed for the camp site. True to form, the camp sites, lapa and ablution were spotless;
they are still living up to the "Eco" part, notwithstanding new ownership. The hot water which
was a problem last year had also been repaired.
On the way up Corné had a problem with his brakes, but this seemed to fix it self. Chris
has a leaking clutch fluid problem but they also managed to sort out through regular top ups.
Other than this, the vehicles all performed well, thanks mostly to responsible drivers and
navigators, while on the trails.
Friday evening saw us congregated in the lapa for a braai where there was much laughter and
jokes. We set off at 9h30 on Saturday morning to do the Brulberg Trail which includes
the "Knifes Edge". In fact we even managed to do the "Knifes Edge" in the dark, but that's
another storey! After briefly looking for the fossils we stopped at the picnic site for a
well earned lunch break. The trail itself was in good condition, while the rivers were dry,
would be fun to do this trail after a bit of rain in this area. After lunch we did the
Springbokvlakte Trail where we saw Springbok, Gemsbok and Wildebeest. This trail is flat
as the name suggests and is mainly for game viewing.
Saturday evening saw a communal braai in the lapa once again with much fun and laughter.
Sunday morning we decided to do the Rondomtalie Trail and do snacks at the Addersfontein
Picnic spot. Interestingly enough, most people seemed to enjoy the Rondomtalie Trail more
than the Brulberg Trail, this was probably due to the fact that the Rondomtalie was more
challenging and also had more interesting view points. In the old half demolished building
at Addersfontein we came across an old tie for horses or goats. We could easily have stayed
for longer. After packing up we headed home via Montagu. Did lunch at the Montagu Kloof
Padstal where good service and food was had. "Pancakes for Africa" would be the best
description; main course and desert was the order of the day. Thereafter it was goodbyes
and headed for Cape Town and started planning our next trip. No broken ankles on this trip!
Thanks again to everyone that attended our trip it was a wonderful one.
Ian & Veronica
