Bojaankop - 29th to 30th September 2007
After some late withdrawals we had 3 vehicles for this trip, and we departed Friday
afternoon, traveled on the N2 and via the worthwhile Tradoux Pass to Barrydale. Then on to
our destination, new to all of us, just before Calitzdorp. Our group consisted of
Erica & Corne Smal, Jorg & Rochelle Mauderer with their daughters Claudia & Tina, and
us [Viv & Mary]. Bojaankop 4x4 Trail and bush camp are on the Matjiesvlei farm, which also
has cottages for hire, and lies in the valley of the Gamka river, owned by our hosts Bennie
and Selma Nel, 5th generation farmers of ostriches and dairy cows.
A very scenic gravel road to the farm, and a track to the camp through pastures, rivers
and rocky riverbeds enhances the character of the venue, and the low dam wall at the camp
backs the river up some 2 km, which makes for good fishing and boating.
Saturday morning was cool and overcast, but only very light rain early in the day. The
trail was straightforward, except for one steep climb with loose shale, which could be
very interesting in the rain. It leads to the 540m Bojaankop, from where one has fabulous 360
deg. views of the mountain ranges, river and farmlands. Interesting plants are numbered/marked
along the route, and a leisurely trip with regular coffee breaks was enjoyed by all. Back at
the farmhouse Bennie & Selma invited the youngsters to attend the milking, and they really
enjoyed the occasion.
Great couple, Bennie & Selma. They spent a great deal of time chatting to us, and making
sure all was okay at camp. No problems there! Very clean and piping hot water with good
pressure earned praise from all of us. On Sunday morning we broke camp quite early, and left
Bennie & Selma with promises of returning sometime soon. A round trip of Red Stone Hills and
Groenfontein brought us back to the Rose of the Karoo in Calitzdorp for lunch, and to finish
off we traveled back via Seweweekspoort, with Corne and Erica insisting on stopping for coffee
and cake at Maaitjiesfontein.
A very relaxing enjoyable weekend.
