Tree Tops - 5th to 7th October 2007
The group consisted of Ian and Veronica, André
and Lorraine, Andy and Jeanene Clive and Linda and George
and Susan. Greg and Gloria were forced to pull out of
the trip because of Greg's broken leg. We met André
and Lorraine at lunchtime on Friday outside of Malmesbury
and travelled up together. The rest of the group made
their own ways up the N7 during Friday afternoon since
everyone had different time constraints. The trip up
took place in fine weather with a prediction of cold,
rain for Saturday and Sunday. On the way up past the
Citrusdal Baths and at the Tree Tops camp, there was
evidence of the flood damage from the heavy rains that
had hit the Citrusdal valley earlier during this winter.
Both of the farmer's canoes had been washed away, thanks
to Andy and Jeanene for bringing along a canoe which
was available for those who wanted to venture onto the
river.
Friday evening saw the communal braai take place and
we were entertained by André's stories of many
of his past trips and experiences. There was also prolific
bird life (the flying kind, that is) at the camp which
kept us guessing as to names. After a slow start on
Saturday morning we made our way through to Citrudal
to do a Saturday morning shop. Citrusdal on a Saturday
morning is something else; we eventually found a shop
which vaguely could pass as a supermarket. Thereafter,
it was decided to have lunch at the Citrusdal Baths.
The food was good and affordable. André and Lorraine
and ourselves decided to watch the England / Australia
quarter final rugby match while the rest of the group
made their way back to the camp. Jeanen's sons tried
to get us waterblometjies out of the river for our potjiekos,
however, the flowers were not yet properly developed.
The weather report was spot on as it got very cold and
was starting to rain.
Saturday evening was a potjie tasting evening with 4
potjies being made i.e fish, pasta, meat and chicken
all with their own personal touches. Between the potjies
there were more of André's adventures to be listened
to before going to bed.
Sunday morning was freezing with rain and hail, a sure
sign that there would be snow on the higher laying peaks.
Since there was no rush to get going we left the Tree
Tops around lunchtime after saying our goodbyes. A couple
of hours later we were back in Cape Town refreshed after
an easy, "rustige" weekend and ready to face
another week.
Veronica has already booked next year at the same time
so that Greg, Gloria and family will still have an opportunity
to experience Tree Tops.
Again we would like to thank those how came with
us and Andre I really do love to listen to your stories.
