Dear Members
I hope none of you have washed away with all the rains and lets hope that the rain we
have had is not indicative of the rest of the winter.
Johan Kruger had a narrow escape when his Hilux got washed off a low water bridge in
the Cederberg. He was on his way back after crossing the same bridge the previous day and
suddenly his bakkie fell into a hole and water was at window height. Being cautious he had
let his windows down prior to entering the river and he managed to get his family out of
the vehicle through the windows. His vehicle was recovered a few days later and has been
written off.
We have had a few outings in the last few weeks and I would once again like to reiterate
the fact that winter is a different time of year and that the outings are all provisional
and will get moved around as is necessary. Certain trail are undriveable or are closed when
we have had heavy rains and thus the problem.
Russell and Johann each led a Scheppie Sous trail with both trips being fully booked,
Greg led the Two Oceans Trail trip, Viv and Andy led a private trip to Glen Oakes this
being the run up trip for the Mozambique trip.
What is in the pipeline you ask? Russell has "his" womens day trip to Mount Dyer. This
trip is a family trip BUT with the proviso that the ladies drive. Kingsley Holgate is back
from yet another expedition and we have been invited by the Cape Land Rover Club to
join them at the welcoming party. This should be great fun and we encourage all of you to attend.
West Coast trip, Russell and Greg have been talking about this for some time now and we
will probably run two trips in the Spring. As you know we are not allowed to drive on the
beaches any longer but wecan still drive the sandy tracks that run through through the area.
This is not a 4x4 trip as such but it is a nice and relaxing camping weekend. The trip will
ideally be a three day trip and we will set up camp at two different places on the beach (or
in the vicinity of).
What about long trips? With the petrol price increase long trips have become prohibitively
expensive and a trip to Caprivi and Zambia will cost around R16000 for fuel so working on
camping fees and park fees one would be looking at about R30 000. Thus the members have asked
us to arrange as many local trips as possible and this is what we will try and do. There will
be longer trips but these will be fewer than in 2007.
Even though is cold and petrol is expensive we would love to see you join us on as many
activities as possible.
Greg
