Everyone met promptly at Safari Centre at 18:00 after work, prepared with picnics packed
for the mystery destination as advertised. This turned out to be the wine estate de Grendel
which has been in the Graaff Family for over 100 years.
Our on site host for the evening was Johnnie de Flamingh whom we met at the cellar and who
then lead the convoy up Tygerberg Mountain through the farmland and vineyards. Right on top they
have rebuilt an old shepherd's hut and converted it into a wine tasting hut. The view from the
summit was exquisite with panoramic views of Table Bay and across the flats to False Bay.
The setting sun glowed orange, but the gale force wind caused the air to be very hazy making it
difficult to take good photographs.
Once everyone had unpacked and settled in the hut, Johnnie began with a short introduction
to the farm and there followed the most generous wine tasting portions one could ever hope for!
No sips from this man, but a full glass of Dry Rose, which was followed by their award winning
Sauvignon Blanc and finally their Shiraz. Much chatting and relaxed socializing followed and
at around 21:30 we made our way slowly down the hill and off home.
This was a really special opportunity to drive up an urban mountain where the average
Capetonian will never set foot and we all enjoyed the occasion thoroughly. The entry fee which
everyone paid was donated to one of de Grendel's preferred charities, Camphill.
