Bush Mechanics Course - May 2010
By Greg

We started presenting Bush Mechanics courses almost ten years ago and this one used new presenters, a new venue and a new format.

Greg had spoken to Hein about putting a mechanics course together. This is not a mechanics course as such but more of a "how do I fix .... in the bush". The course was presented by Greg (auto electrics), Hein (basic repairs), Frans (diesel problems).

Hein first worked through a list of tools that should be taken on a trip, but emphasised that if your vehicle is serviced by a reputable company you would probably never need half of them. He then covered mechanics with practical demonstrations done on Dino's Hilux. Clamping brake hoses, engine mountings, etc. More explanations on the cut open diff and gearbox. When is ^&$* use 4th gear! etc.

After loads of information and questions Frans demonstrated how to change diesel filters and bleed a diesel system.

Then it was radiator repair in the bush. Hein destroyed a radiator with a screwdriver and then promptly demo'd the repair procedure. Amazing.

Finally it was all electrical with Greg talking about cables, earth problems, fuses, batteries, alternator repair and finding faults.

The day finished after almost six hours of intense instruction (and burgers).

Thanks to all concerned.
