Womens Day - Buffelsfontein - August 2010

The day started with pretty miserable weather. On the way to the rendezvous, I got the first call - from Joan. It was raining "Cats & Dogs" in Pinelands and she wondered if we were still going. I told her where I was on the West Coast road, the sun was shining and that we were still going.

I got to the farm stall and ordered breakfast. After breakfast, I took a stroll through the garden looking at all the magnificent birds. If you like Parrots, then this place is a must!

There was a bit of rain, and I was expecting more calls with folks cancelling. Surprisingly, nobody else cancelled. After everyone had arrived and completed the indemnity forms, we set off for Buffelsfontein - about 6km up the road.

After the formalities and deflating tyres, we followed the owner to the start of the trail. As we pulled out on the trail, Casper called on the radio to tell me that one of my shock absorbers was hanging loose. I crawled under the truck and tied it up with cable ties. (It held all the way home). At the start of the trail we saw a few Giraffe and some buck. A bit further there were also some Wildebeest.

The trail was not too difficult as the sand was wet. At the first dune climb, we had some fun. A few of the ladies battled a bit. After this it was relatively easy, past he tented camp to the turning point. There we had to reverse the order to get everyone turned around. Cathy handed over the driver's seat to her daughters at this point, with Jos still in the passenger seat. Back at the dune climb, most of the ladies managed it. Jos' daughters both had a go, and the pleasure on their faces was evident (go Landcruiser!). Unfortunately Dusica didn't make it again. When I asked what the tyre pressure was, she told me it was 1.6 bar - Aleks was too lazy to deflate properly (or is it a Landy thing?). He then deflated to a more respectable pressure for off-roading and Dusica said the Landy performed much better. Aleks did apologise to her publicly over the radio, but I think he was in for some punishment when they got home.

At the end of the trail, back at the office, we carried our braai goodies to the lapa and lit the fires. Some of the folks went off to see the Lions while the rest of us relaxed. After lunch, folks inflated their tyres and made their way home.

The ladies in particular seemed to enjoy the day. Even the guys had a good time.
I must congratulate Karin Codd. She drove the HiLux for the first time on tar the previous day and she had never driven it off road. Well Done Karin - you did extremely well. I just hope you give Jason a chance to drive occasionally.
