Atlantis Dunes - February 2011

As the dunes in Atlantis are always popular we scheduled an outing early in the year and WOW we had 22 responses. Hein, Roger and Greg were to lead the groups and thus limit the group size per guide.

It is always better to have an early start and so miss some of the heat in the middle of the day. My sunburn is testimony to my lack of sun screen!

We all met and were ready by 8am, tyres deflated to 0.6 bars, permits handed in and the book completed. Hein left first with the advanced group, Roger left next with the inexperienced and finally Greg left with the intermediate group.

After slowly building up the drivers confidence more and more advanced dunes and trails were attempted until everyone was feeling more at ease. Mitch left us holding our breath after he attempted a very tight turn on what looked like two wheels.

Tyre were deflated again as the sand was so soft with some of us driving at pressures of 0.4 bars.

At about 10am Roger called tea time and we all made our way to "Landy gat" where everyone recounted their mornings adventures. It is always great to see a newcomer getting so excited about what his vehicle can do and today we had a Colt, Mazda, Huyandai, Toyota and Land Rovers. After the break it was more driving and pushing the limits again and this time we had a number of drivers trying obstacles over and over again until they got the angle, gear and speed right for the obstacle.

As the middle of the day approached the typical white out occurs where one cannot see where the dunes rise and fall and at this time the guide has to be extra vigilant. The time was perfect for a break and we all returned once again to "Landy gat" for lunch.

The day turned out well with everyone having a ball and getting more and more experienced.
