Ou Trek Pad (Vaatjie) - June 2011
by Mike Walsh
Sunday 19th June started off as a gloomy one. A typical Cape winters day with low cloud and sheet rain.
We all assembled at the Swartland Engen garage on the N7 before departing in convoy for the Vaatjie
farm some 10 minutes drive from there.
Niel and Kerry in the Hilux led a mix of Land Cruisers, a Disco, a Defender, an Isuzu, a classic Hilux
and my Jeep Wrangler.
Trundling through mud and standing water we made our way through the course.
With all the rain, the sandy stretches which would normally be challenging were somewhat tame, but the
steep climbs in thick mud were good fun.
The course dished out some minor damage, like a bent exhaust and a lost number plate, but no
recoveries were required.
By the time we'd made it back to the lapa and started preparing lunch, the sun had broken through the
gloom and allowed us all to enjoy a fantastic braai.
Being Father's Day, gifts were handed out to all the Dads. All in all a fantastic day out.
